When was you first race together? Which series and team were you competing with?

Ayrton – “The first one was Belcar in… 2018?”

Yannick – “2017.”

A – “2017?”

Y – “Yeah, we drove the Fiesta Cup in… no, wait, it was 2018!”

A – “Yeah, 2018! That was with a BMW 325i. At Zolder, in Belgium.”

Y – “And that was an endurance race too. Three hours.”

What would you say is your best moment in the 24H SERIES whilst you have been teammates?

A – “Becoming European champions in Barcelona last year. It was a very good race we drove, together with our dad [Bert] and Sam [Dejonghe]. The whole race, we had very good pace, and we finished, I think, six laps ahead of 2nd place [HRT Performance]. Okay, the Red Camel Porsche crashed, but even after they repaired the car, we were still as fast as them during the race. I think it was maybe the best race we drove together, and the best memory we have. One we want to repeat this year as well!”

Y – “Agreed. Perfect!”

Ayrton which is Yannick’s favourite track?

A – “Spa.”

And Yannick, which is Ayrton’s favourite track?

Y – “Spa!”

Which circuit haven’t you visited together, but would like to?

A – “Bathurst.”

Y – “I like that answer…” [slight pause]

Ayrton, to Yannick – “Nordschleife. Nordschleife!”

Y[Laughs before pausing again] “Interlagos. It’s a nice track, the atmosphere always looks good, and also they have Porsche Carrera Cup [Brazil] there.”

Ayrton, what is Yannick’s best quality as a driver?

A – “Raw speed. Just the qualifying laps he can pull together are just… sometimes they are just spot on, and I see the onboard laps and think, ‘how the f*** did he get that out of the car?!’ ” [Both laugh]

And Yannick, what is Ayrton’s best quality?

Y – “He has a lot of good qualities, but I think his best is driving in the wet.”

Ayrton, what is the most embarrassing thing Yannick has done during your time as teammates?

A[Slight pause] “Probably crashed! But, now I’m trying to think which one…”

Y – “Actually, I have one for both of us. When we drove in the Fiesta Cup, we were both out for qualifying …”

[Ayrton, who’s clearly just realized which race Yannick is referring to, starts laughing…]

Y – “…and, in the Fiesta, it’s really hard to warm up your rear tyres because all the traction is at the front. So, we were both warming up our tyres, very aggressively, and we spun off the track, at the same corner, with 100 metres between us! We made the same mistake, on the same lap, at the same corner!” [Both laugh]

A – “They threw the red flag, at that corner for both of us. I managed to escape, but he was stuck. There’s footage of it, if you want to see it…?” It’s the easiest question CREVENTIC has ever been asked during a Head-to-Head interview, and Ayrton is soon looking through his phone for the incriminating footage.

Y – “Our girlfriends were both in the grandstand at that time, also at that corner! So, first, they see him going off, and then me!”

A – “First one, it was like, ‘who is it?! Oh, doesn’t matter, the other one is there as well!’ But this thing is, we were trying to slipstream, so when I lost it, he just reacted to avoid me, and lost it as well! But there was no contact.”

Quick fire round! Answer for yourselves…

-       Ford or Ferrari?

A – “Ferrari.”

Y – “Ferrari.”

-       Cats or Dogs?

A – “Dogs.”

Y – “Dogs.”

-       12 Hours, or 24 Hours?

A – “24.”

Y – “24.”

-       Petrol or electric?

[Both laugh] A – “That’s not even a question! Petrol!”

Y – “Yeah, petrol!”

-       Max or Lewis?!

A – “Max.”

Y – “Lewis.”

Ayrton, describe Yannick in one word.

A – “Fast.”

And Yannick, describe Ayrton in one word.

A – “Old? Fat?!” [Both laugh]

Y – “Wingman!”

Which one of you is fastest?!

A – “He’s a little more aggressive, and I’m maybe a bit more relaxed. So, during qualifying, it’s usually him…”

Y – “Except today, it was him!”

A – “…and I think, during a complete race stint, I would probably have the edge. But it depends on the track as well. If we go to Zolder, I might be faster. If we go to Spa, he might be faster.”

Y – “Yeah, it really depends on the track, but it’s always a small difference. But, I think we have never been to a track where we have more than one second between us.”

Turns out, that weekend in Estoril, it was Ayrton who had the edge on Yannick during qualifying for the Hankook 12H ESTORIL, albeit by just four-tenths. Sadly for the brothers, Red Ant Racing’s #903 Porsche 992 GT3 Cup didn’t quite have the pace of Red Camel-Jordans.nl or nearest championship rival Willi Motorsport by Ebimotors or, who took ‘992’ class honours in the 6H Qualifying Race and the Hankook 12H ESTORIL respectively, but back-to-back 3rd place finishes meant Red Ant Racing retained its standings lead heading into the Hankook 24H BARCELONA European season finale.
