Newly-crowned TCR Teams’ champion Holmgaard Motorsport has confirmed it’s CUPRA Leon Competición TCR will not compete in the 24H SERIES powered by Hankook next year as the Danish team sets its sights on a new challenge in the 992 class.

Holmgaard Motorsport, the eponymous outfit of series staple Kim Holmgaard, has contested CREVENTIC’s TCR class regularly since 2017, doing so with a SEAT León Cup Racer, a Volkswagen Golf GTi and, most recently, with the CUPRA. Magnus and Jonas Holmgaard, Roy Edland and Martin Vedel Mortensen finally picked up the team’s first TCR class win at Spa-Francorchamps in 2022, ironically, just one race before the CUPRA made its debut. Having secured a podium finish on debut at the Hockenheimring (impressively, without any pre-event testing), the #102 CUPRA has gone on to take class wins at Spa – again – and Monza this year. At the Hankook 24H BARCELONA, Holmgaard finished 2nd in-class to Wolf-Power Racing, securing the team’s maiden TCR Teams’ championship in the process.

During a post-qualifying interview with radiolemans.com’s Diana Binks though, Magnus Holmgaard confirmed that the European season finale would be the last 24H SERIES event for the CUPRA. Post-race, his father Kim explained to CREVENTIC that the team would be moving up to the increasingly competitive 992 class from 2024 onwards.

Set to compete for overall 992 honours rather than in the 992-Am class, the new Holmgaard Motorsport Porsche 992 GT3 Cup is likely to make its debut at next year’s Hankook 24H DUBAI on 12-13-14 January. A full European season is potentially in the offing as well, with the team currently searching for drivers. Interested parties can contact [email protected].

When asked about pre-event predictions for the new Porsche, Holmgaard admitted that fighting for victory straight out of the traps would be difficult, but the 2017 TCR Drivers’ ‘Europe’ champion admitted his team was still setting its sights high.

“We have bought a new 992, GT3 Cup car that will be ready in our workshop in October,” Kim explained to CREVENTIC. “Obviously, I’d like to say we come to Dubai to win! But I know that will be difficult. But I think if we can be in the top five, we can be very satisfied with that for the first race.

“But I don’t think it will take more than the first weekend [to get up to speed]. Yes, there’s really strong competition. I can see they are very quick in the Porsche, but I also think, why not? After a couple of races, we could be among the front runners. We are very good with our strategy, and I have done many races myself with rear-wheel drive, so I think we, in a short time, could be in the top three, four or five, and maybe higher.”

There remains the possibility that Holmgaard Motorsport’s new Porsche could make its debut at December’s Hankook 12H KUWAIT, though this is yet to be finalized.

“For sure we will be in Dubai. We are also looking at Kuwait, but for sure Dubai. And we have to find drivers, of course.”

While newly-crowned TCR Drivers’ champions Magnus and Jonas Holmgaard are likely to continue their 24H SERIES program, Kim’s latter remark could be a nod to long-time team staple Roy Edland – and 2023 TCR Drivers’ champion – who is set to take a break from 24H SERIES competition after his podium finish at Barcelona.

“We want to take a moment to express our deep appreciation for Roy Edland, who has been an invaluable part of our journey,” the team explained on social media. “Roy, your exceptional driving skills and dedication have left an indelible mark on our team. It's been an absolute pleasure having you with us!

“As we bid farewell, we'll carry the memories of your outstanding contributions and the incredible moments we've shared on and off the track. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.”
