SPS automotive performance team principal Stephan Sohn feels confident the Heart of Racing by SPS Mercedes can repeat its class win at last year’s Hankook 12H MUGELLO, and potentially put itself in contention for outright victory.
Heart of Racing by SPS – a joint venture between America’s The Heart of Racing Team and Hankook 24H DUBAI class winner SPS automotive performance – made its first European start in the 24H SERIES powered by Hankook last year in Mugello, ending a successful weekend with GT3-Am victory and an overall podium finish.
With the American-German collaboration having re-entered both the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and an unchanged driver line-up (Gray Newell, Roman de Angelis and Heart of Racing team owner Ian James) for this weekend’s 2024 Hankook 12H MUGELLO, Sohn feels confident the team can play a strong role in GT3 once again.
“After last year's strong result, we obviously hope to repeat this success,” Sohn explains. “The team and drivers are well-rehearsed and already know the track and the procedure from last year. I think we can once again play a strong role in the battle for class victory.”

Fresh from a GT3-Pro/Am podium finish at the 2023 Hankook 24H DUBAI, the Heart of Racing by SPS made a strong start to last year’s Hankook 12H MUGELLO by qualifying on the front row of the grid and running among the frontrunners during the opening hour.
The Mercedes’ momentum was briefly stymied during the second hour courtesy of a trip into the gravel, which brought out the first Code 60 of the event and dropped Newell, de Angelis and James three laps down. “An incredibly good job” the next day though meant the trio had already recovered to 5th overall and 2nd in GT3-Am by half-distance, and would later follow eventual winner Haas RT and 2nd-placed Saintéloc Racing Team over the line to secure its first-ever 24H SERIES outright podium and its first class win. The team would go one better one round later at Spa-Francorchamps by finishing 2nd overall.
