New video confirms that more than 50 per cent of the track changes proposed for the Yas Marina Circuit have been completed ahead of the 2022 Hankook 6H ABU DHABI.
More than half of the construction work proposed by the Yas Marina Circuit during the summer has now been completed, as confirmed by a teaser video on ‘Yas TV’.
In June, management at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi confirmed that turns five and nine, and the turn 12-15 complex, would be remodeled in an effort to improve overtaking opportunities. Both the tight left-hand hairpin in front of the North Grandstand and the left-right-left sequence overlooked by the South Grandstand will be replaced by higher-speed left handers. The radii at turns 12 to 15 meanwhile – formerly turns 17 to 20 – will be widened to allow cars to follow each other more closely beneath the neighbouring Viceroy Hotel.
Billed as a “an important moment in [the track’s] evolution” – this being the first major restructure since the circuit’s opening in 2009 – circuit operations director Ali Al Beshr confirmed that demolition of the old corner layouts and removable of requisite barriers and lighting has now been completed, and that asphalt re-surfacing is well underway. Renovations are set to be completed ahead of this year’s Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December.
The Yas Marina Circuit has already been confirmed on the 24H SERIES calendar for 2022. The Emirati venue held its first official CREVENTIC event in 2019 during the Dutch promotion’s time at the helm of the TCR Middle East Series, and in January this year hosted the inaugural, non-championship Hankook 6H ABU DHABI. After a successful inaugural event, won outright by 24H SERIES staple Car Collection Motorsport, the second edition of the Hankook 6H ABU DHABI is now set to be held on 21-22 January in 2022, one week after the 17th annual Hankook 24H DUBAI.
