WTM Racing is anticipating an “intense weekend” of competitive at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, the German team having entered its Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo for its 24H SERIES return at the Hankook 12H SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS as well as its LMP3-spec Duqueine M30-D08 for the opening round of the inaugural Prototype Cup Germany.
The fourth edition of the Hankook 12H SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS will be the first 24H SERIES race for ‘Wochenspiegel Team Monschau’ since last year’s 24-hour event at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Though gearbox failure stymied WTM Racing on that occasion, the #22 Ferrari, with which father-son duo Georg and Leonard Weiss will compete alongside Jochen Krumbach and Daniel Keilwitz this weekend, completed shakedown during CREVENTIC’s ‘Track Days’ on Wednesday.
Alongside his GT3 commitments, Leonard Weiss will also compete in the opening round of the Prototype Cup Germany at Spa-Francorchamps with Torsten Kratz. This marks the first time WTM Racing will compete in two different motorsport disciplines on the same weekend.
“This is a weekend that we have been looking forward to for a long time,” Georg Weiss explains. “We will have both divisions of the team together in the same place. That will give us great pleasure. From a sporting point of view, Leo and Torsten are highly motivated… They have already completed five races this year and should quickly settle into the new racing series. It is the first race [of the season] for our Ferrari team. We had an extensive test on Wednesday and shook off the rust there. We are excellently prepared and expect a lot.”
“I'm happy that things will continue straight away and that we can gain even more experience in the LMP3,” Leonard Weiss continues. “I'm also excited to see how the changes in Spa will affect the [racing]. I'm all the happier to start in the Ferrari again, since it's been a long time since my last start in September 2021 [that year’s Hankook 24H BARCELONA]. I hope to make the change without any major problems and to be able to change quickly again and again.”
WTM Racing has already got its weekend at Spa off to a stellar start with the team’s maiden outright pole position in the 24H SERIES. Starting on the front row, WTM, prepared this weekend by Rinaldi Racing, will surely be hoping to emulate, if not better, its last outright 24H SERIES podium, secured at Portimão in 2019.
The first 5.5 hours of the race proper will be flown at 12.25 hrs local time on Saturday 23 April. Following CREVENTIC’s customary overnight intervention, the final 6.5 hours of the 2022 Hankook 12H SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS will be completed between 11.20 hrs and 17.50 hrs on Sunday 24 April.
