News | June 11, 2020Nico Verdonck: “We’re not going to be bored!”
The waiting is finally over! At the end of this week Nico Verdonck will be back on track competing in the 24 Hours of Portimao.” I can’t wait to be racing again”, Nico admitted. “During the confinement I kept myself pretty busy looking after my physical condition, taking care of my family and preparing the launch of NV Academy, a new company on which I will reveal more information in a few weeks.”
With the rescheduling of all the race calendars, for Nico Verdonck the second part of 2020 promises to be pretty well filled. “Together with my trusted clients, I will have the opportunity to compete in between 15 and 20 events in 2020”, the Belgian driver commented. “Which, considering the circumstances and the unavoidable clash of dates in a season which has been condensed into a few months, is a great programme.”
Part of Nico’s racing programme centres around Rodrigue Gillion, whom he has been coaching since one and a half years. “Rodrigue’s progress is remarkable, and we have great fun together”, the young father adds with delight. “Our second place in the VW Fun Cup at the 10 Hours of Abu-Dhabi at the beginning of this year proves that the coaching programme we set-up is efficient and is bearing its fruits. And I’m convinced that the 2020 season will bring about a new stage in Rodrigue’s racing career!”
Over the coming months the two men will compete in four events of the 24 Hours Series at the wheel of an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 entered by the PROsport Performance team. After the 24 Hours of Portimao, with Tom Heeren and Christian Schöll as teammates, the 24 Hours of Barcelona (4th-6th September), the 12 Hours of Imola (9th-10th October) and the 12 Hours of Zandvoort (13th-14th November) will follow.
Apart from these endurance events, they will, on two occasions, join the GT Cup, a more “sprint” oriented competition organised supporting the GT Open. As such the Paul Ricard Circuit (21st – 23rd August) and the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit (16th – 18th October) are on the menu.
But that’s not all! Also the VW Fun Cup retains an important place in Nico’s racing programme with the meetings of Zandvoort (11th- 13th September) and Spa-Francorchamps (29th-31st October), on each occasion within the DRM Motorsport structure headed by Matthieu de Robiano.
In addition to his programme with Rodrigue, Nico will have the opportunity to prove his talents on the renowned Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, where his reputation needs no introduction. Once again behind the wheel of an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 entered by PROsport Performance, he will act both as driver and coach for his teammates Guido Dumarey and Alexander Walker. Eight races of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (previously called VLN), and the 24 Hours of the Eifel are highlighted in Nico’s diary.
“To this already extensive programme one might also be able to add the Spa 6 Hours, a competition for historic vehicles which I won in 2018 together with Marcus von Oeynhausen with the Ford GT 40 of Gotcha Historic Racing Team”, Nico added. “And I must admit that talks are on-going for the 24 Hours of Zolder as well… In a nutshell, it doesn’t look as though we’re going to be bored in this 2020 season!”
